Keeping in Shape During the Holidays

If your typical Christmas looks like less time working out, more drinking, less motivation, and eating until your stomach hurts, then… you’re not alone. With office parties, Christmas shopping, and family gatherings, it can be hard to stick to your health and fitness routine during the holiday season.

So, here’s the deal: you won’t be able to go to the gym every day and you won’t be able to avoid treats every now and then. But these 5 Holiday Fitness hacks might help you feel a little better over the holidays and make it easier to get back into shape in January.

PUMP UP YOUR NUTRIENT AND WATER INTAKE AT HOME

Having fun at parties and events is all the more reason to keep things normal at home. You can fight back against those treats by drinking more water and adding more nutrient-dense food to your week.

CHOOSE WHAT YOU WANT TO DO

It’s easy to feel like you have to go to EVERY Christmas party you’re invited to, but it’s fine to pick and choose. Maybe you got too many invitations to events (they’re so popular! You have a lot of plans, and the thought of going to all of them makes you feel overwhelmed.) Just remember that it’s okay to say no if you want to stay in bed and watch Netflix or go to the gym and make a healthy meal.

SET BOUNDARIES

Set up a deal with your own self. If you set your own limits, such as limiting your alcohol intake to no more than 5 units per week or committing to eating 5 servings of vegetables every day, regardless of the occasion, you will be far less likely to stray from them.

BE FLEXIBLE

Your approach to working out should be as flexible as possible. If you get home later than planned from a festive lunch, leaving you with little time for a workout at the gym, try going for a run around the block or doing a circuit workout at home instead. Any form of physical activity is preferable than none at all when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

ENJOY YOURSELF

This is without a doubt the most essential piece of advice. HAVE FUN! Keep in mind that your road toward better health and fitness does not have to be an all-or-nothing situation. You can strike a balance that allows you to indulge in the food and activities that bring you joy while still keeping your body active and providing it with the nutrients it needs. Okay, by all means, hit the workout first thing in the morning and fuel yourself with a hearty meal, but maybe do us a favor and eat some of that Christmas pudding!
