An AI Food Camera That Watches You Eat (and What It Reveals)

CES always delivers at least one “wait… what?” device. This year, Amazfit brought two:

  1. V1TAL Food Camera — an AI camera you place near your plate while you eat

  2. Helio Smart Glasses — fitness-first smart glasses that display stats during runs/rides

The weird one: a camera that watches you eat

Here’s the idea: instead of snapping one photo of a meal, the V1TAL captures images every few seconds. That means it can estimate:

  • What you ate

  • How much you ate

  • How fast you ate

  • What you left behind (hello, untouched vegetables)

Amazfit then uploads the log to its app and offers “gentle coaching” like slowing down if you ate quickly.

The useful one: glasses that keep you in the zone

The Helio Smart Glasses aim at fitness, not notifications. Paired with an Amazfit watch, they could show:

  • Steps, pace, distance

  • Turn-by-turn directions during a route

  • All in the middle of your field of view

Promising, but early (important reality check)

Both devices are very early prototypes with no firm launch plans. Translation: intriguing concept, not something you can count on buying soon.

What this means for you (takeaways you can use now)

You don’t need a food camera to get the “behavior insight” benefit:

  • Try the 60-second pause: before eating, take one breath, decide your “goal” (energy, satisfaction, protein, veggies).

  • Slow down one notch: aim for one meal per day where you put the fork down between bites.

  • Track “how,” not just “what”: the most useful log can be a simple note: fast/distracted/satisfied / still hungry.

And if you love wearables:

  • The future isn’t just measuring your body—it’s coaching your decisions in real time. That’s powerful… and it’s worth being intentional about privacy, notifications, and how much “outsourcing” of awareness you actually want.

These prototypes are weird in the best way. The real win is the insight: how you eat and how you pace yourself often matters as much as what you eat.
