More than ever before, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic “health” of your fitness amenity is tied to its cleanliness and the perception of a safe environment. Modern fitness facility design – with its minimalist design aesthetic – requires more care to address any issues because those health and cleanliness issues stand out more.
- A facility in 2020 must be sanitized properly or it will turn away clients who fear infection
- Clients and staff must be aware of and follow proper cleanliness and mindfulness procedures
- Management, Staff, and clientele must work together as a team to ensure the sanitation process is effective against disease
Now is the time to initiate your Sanitation Response to the COVID-19 crisis, and create a better, healthier fitness amenity for remainder of 2020 and beyond. Your facility is now required to be seen as responsive to the needs and concerns of clients and their health. Here, we have outlined the strategy to address those needs and concerns.
SANITATION
The following procedures and protocols must be implemented to raise the sanitation level of your fitness amenity:
-
Your entire facility must be sanitized using a professional sprayer and disinfection solution (such as an electrostatic sprayer) to kill as many germs, viruses, and pathogens as possible.
-
Individual pieces of equipment must be sprayed with an anti-microbial surface protectant. Especially microbe-laden equipment such as stationary bikes, treadmills, dumbbells, and the like.
-
Facility surfaces like desks, chairs, retail areas, bathrooms, storage, must all be cleaned and sprayed. Any area that people come into contact with, or where dirt and dust accumulate, needs to be addressed with an effective disinfectant and anti-microbial solution.
-
Disinfectant tools, such as wipes and hand sanitizers, should be placed at strategic locations to encourage use.
MINDFULNESS
Mindfulness is the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something. Facilities must encourage mindfulness in their staff and clientele. Everyone using your facility must be aware of their responsibility to other people also using the facility.
-
Social distancing should be in effect.
-
Signage, graphics, and artwork should inform and inspire your staff and clientele to protect their health and the health of others
-
Remind clients and staff to use the sanitizing resources you’ve placed out for their safety
-
Solicit feedback from everyone on how things look, any concerns, and deliver future plans. The goal is to develop your clientele into intelligence resources to properly position your fitness amenity.
Mindfulness requires everyone to work together to make it work.
TEAMWORK
Owners, managers, staff, and clients need to work together to ensure the quality and safety of their fitness amenity. This requires:
-
Communication – everyone has a role to play
-
Interaction – people need to know how it’s going
-
Action – people should be inspired to do the work by being shown appreciation.
By sanitizing your facility, encouraging mindfulness, and fostering teamwork, you will initiate the proper sanitation response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This will help ensure your facility’s foundation – its clientele – will return and participate in protecting your fitness community’s future health and fitness.
